Awards:
The SCA presents a wide variety of awards to active, helpful,
courageous,
or inspiring members.
The first and most basic award within the SCA is the Award of
Arms. This kingdom-level award is given for activity and
dedication in any area of activity within the SCA.
The most visible awards within the SCA are the peerages - The Order of
the Pelican, the Order of the Laurel, and the Knighthood. Members
of the Order of the Pelican are chosen based on a history of service to
the Society, members of the Order of the Laurel have demonstated
excellence in research and scholarship, and members of the Knighthood
are chosen based upon martial prowess and chivalrous conduct.
Each order also has junior members: A member of the order of the
Pelican will instruct one or more Proteges, a member of the Order of
the Laurel will select and teach Apprentices, and a Knight will choose
and train Squires.
The peerages all have unique and readily identifiable symbols. A
member of the Order of the Pelican will wear a (sometimes stylized)
pelican badge, and their proteges will wear yellow belts. A
member of the Order of the Laurel will wear a laural badge (again,
sometimes stylized), and their apprentices will wear green belts.
A Knight will wear a white belt, and sometimes spurs, and their squires
will wear red belts.
Other awards given within the SCA can be found, along with information
on how to formally address the holders of awards, at in the awards section of
the Midrealm's heraldry website.
Any member of the SCA can nominate someone for an award - and should do
so, as this is the only real way to make officials at the kingdom level
aware of the efforts and accomplishments of other members. Award
recommendations can be submitted electronically (after registering on
the midrealm website), at: http://www.midrealm.org/op/recommend/
